So this last Friday I finally got around to buying a keyboard to hook up to my computer. That's right, kids, I've been composing by placing notes on a staff. I'll probably continue to do so, too, but the MIDI keyboard will help with a number of things. At any rate, I was pretty busy this weekend, so I didn't get much time to screw around with it until today. What was I doing? Well...
Saturday I went to purchase a MIDI cable for the keyboard (Best Buy didn't have what I needed), and when I got back, my housemates announced that we were having an impromptu keg party. Meh. Anyway, we probably had in excess of 30 people come, which was kinda cool; I saw some people I haven't seen in six years, which was nice (though a little unnerving). That didn't stop it from sucking, though, because, well, in general parties suck.
Sunday I finished recording on one of the projects I've been working on... without the help of the keyboard. Actually these particular pieces have been done for about a week now, but I needed time to sit down, get them recorded, properly filtered, reverbed where necessary, etc., etc., etc. They worked out nicely. Possibly more info on this will be coming in the indeterminate future. Maybe.
Also Sunday, Rob Matsushita's last play at Broom Street Theater closed, so I had to attend. This was the earliest I'd ever arrived for a BST show, and holy jeepers, was there a line. I was worried that I might not get in. Luckily when the doors opened, only eight or so people had lined up behind me, and we squeezed, but it was worth it. The final night of Psychos in Love was a success, and the cast did a few jokes they'd been saving for the final performance. Probably the best $7 I've spent on a night out in awhile.
Then later Sunday night I had a profound, metaphysical experience. Well, actually, it was more of a physical experience, but it led to an epiphany which will probably refocus major aspects of my life. I can't talk about it here because many of y'all know the people involved, and I'd like to keep it more or less private, but suffice to say that changes will occur. Changes imperceptible to most people, but changes nonetheless. And um, no, the epiphany probably isn't what you're thinking -- I'm still straight.
Labor day I hung out with my friend Jim, and we did the sort of things that Jim and I are prone to doing when we hang out together, such as nearly getting our fingers torn off by a century-old steam-powered engine, and trying out his new milkshake mixer.
Oh, and tonight I got home from work and screwed around with my keyboard for the first time. The 23-second result is called You Call This Italian Food? and took me, start to finish, about half an hour to compose, record, and edit. Not too shabby, considering that I started without any ideas.

Well hey, that's pretty cool. I don't know Karl at all, but we've spoken briefly -- he played Herman the Cannibalistic Plumber from Hell in the show that just ended. I actually work in the same building as Brian, and see him fairly often. I saw his last two shows. Karl was in one of those, too.
Just listened to the MP3. nice thiem; It might be interesting expanded as a fuge or something along those lines... What synthesizer do you use for sound production?
My setup is probably the closest you can get to low-fi on a PC...
I use a program called Noteworthy Composer
which is sort of the Yugo of music scoring programs (but I happen to like it very much), and the sounds you're actually hearing were produced by a samples taken from a couple of different soundfonts called Syngergi and Silverspring. Additionally, I sometimes use a program called WinGroove
for my MIDI output, which I happen very much to like. Unfortunately, the samples WinGroove uses are of less than fantastic quality and usually need to be run through a low pass filter. I guess that's irrelevant, since you didn't hear any WinGroove sounds in that piece. Um, anyway, I use Cool Edit
for all my recording, effects, etc., but I just went to their website and found out that it's been bought out by Adobe and renamed Audition. Bummer.
