03:44 pm - More late to work, this time with sick pay.
You know what? I probably don't have a cold. Nobody around me is getting sick, Ellen's not sick... this is probably a minor sinus infection (minor because sinus infections usually suck more than this).

Nevertheless, I was late to work today. Really late. Not a big deal, as far as work is concerned. I went to bed around the usual time last night, and at some point looked at the clock, saw that it was 3:02 AM, and realized that I hadn't fallen asleep yet. I called my boss and the AEG (who I'm required to call in the event of an absence) and said that I might be in -- if I could get any rest. I'm not sure when I actually fell asleep, but I got to work around 11:45.

Before work I decided to run a couple of errands that probably wouldn't get done otherwise. Ellen's birthday is tomorrow, and I've gotten her something. I don't have any cool giftwrap at home though, and much as I dislike the mall, I figured that Hot Topic, that gothic shrine to corporpate whoredom, would probably have something more appropriate than Hallmark. Well, that and the mall is only slightly out of my way on the drive to work.

Hot Topic did indeed have appropriate wrapping paper. That was fairly lucky, as they only had one kind, and it was on clearance: $0.98 per sheet, marked down from something like $3.00. Less cool was the conversation with a girl who recognized me:

Her: Hey, um, did you go to Stoughton?
Me: Yes, I did.
Her: Yeah, I remember. You sang that Weird Al song at pops one year, right?
Me: That was me.
Her: And that song about the exploding ferret.
Me: Yeah.
Her: Wow, you've really been packin' on the pounds, huh? Oh, I gotta run, but it was nice seeing you!
Me: See ya later.

That transcript is as close to verbatim as remembered conversations get, folks. I can't remember her name, but I know she's younger than I am. Anyway, yeah, I've put on some weight since high school, but that's what happens when you go from working in a hospital kitchen to working in an office. The joke here is "You've heard of the Freshman Fifteen, right? Well we have the Metavante Forty" (which I am still well below, thank you very much).

Um, anyway, Hot Topic, then a couple of other places, and then to work. I'll probably stay a little late tonight to cut down on the amount of sick time I'm taking. I never use up my alloted sick time during the year, but I feel weird taking it at the beginning of the year, especially at a time when I'm not really too sick to work. I really could have gone in at 8:00, but I'd only have had the capacity for drooling and watching Austin Powers movies.

Tomorrow evil_jim and I are getting together to watch the Animation Show (which the box office at The Orpheum assures us will still be playing, contrary to what the paper says). He'll finally get the harmonica I bought him for Decemberween, and then Ellen and I are getting together to celebrate her birthday.

Wow, it's 3:42. I should probably get back to work. I'll leave y'all with this:

Well that was pretty rotten of her. You don't seem like you've gained weight to me, and if it really did concern you, I know you could take well enough care of it.
Garmonbozia for the soul.
