The Pirates! In an Adventure with YOU!

Everybody seems interested in piratey things right now, thanks to Pirates of the Caribbean and the Temple of Doom. That makes this the perfect time for me to point everyone to the excellent works of Gideon Defoe, and the contest he's running.

Gideon Defoe, as you're probably not aware, is the author of the incredibly entertaining The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists, The Pirates! In an Adventure with Whaling, and the upcoming The Pirates! In an Adventure with Communists. A couple of years ago I was trying hard to get my friends to read Scientists, but despite rave reviews from, well, everybody, none of you listened (as far as I know). Bastards.

But anyway, Mr. Defoe has recently announced his Finish the Pirate Captain's Story Contest. The winning entry gets published in the back of the fourth The Pirates! book, which may or may not be entitled The Pirates! In an Adventure with Napoleon. Either way, as Mr. Defoe points out, this could be the start of someone's illustrious writing career:
A lot of famous writers, such as Martin Amis, Salman Rushdie and even Vladimir Nabokov began their literary careers by getting a short story published in the back of a pirate book, so this could well do the same for you.
Those unfamiliar with The Pirates! and who are curious about the contest may wish to check out this page at NPR.org which contains a sizable excerpt from The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists, as well as a streaming audio interview with Mr. Defoe. I think everyone should listen to the interview because he has perhaps the most awkward voice I've ever heard on the radio.

Confidential to those of you who are Liz: Guess which book you left at my house this evening? I'll bring it over on Tuesday.
