|11:00 am - In memory of Archimedes and Ludolph van Ceulen|
I would like to take this opportunity to remind you all to eat some pie today, this being March 14th and all.

Being a somewhat dimwitted variety of geek, the reason that I should eat pie did not dawn on me until lunchtime. By the time I thought of it, the cafeteria had closed. Oh well, it would be more authentic to eat it just before midnight tonight anyway ...
's okay. I ordered a pie from Country Kitchen, picked it up over my lunchbreak, and will not be eating it until this evening when it's fully cooled.
The Wikipedia entry on Pi Day
suggests other ways of celebrating Pi Day, and links to Mole Day which occurs on "October 23, between 6:02 AM and 6:02 PM" in commemoration of Avogadro's number. I bring this up because I find this excerpt entertaining:
Many high schools around the United States and in Canada celebrate Mole Day as a way to get their students interested in chemistry. Results have been mixed.
Incidentally, Wikipedia tells me that there are a couple of other holidays
going on today.
And it's all contingent on who gives gifts to whom on Valentine's Day! Or, if no gift is given on Valentine's Day, then you have to wait until April
to have your contingent holiday.
Oh man! Black day is my ex-girlfriend's birthday...
I rather like the idea of "Steak and Blowjob Day"... but where am I gonna find steak on such short notice?

In the words of Yakov Smirnoff...
"In Soviet Russia, the steak finds you."
Did you click the link on the word "other"? I don't think that's contingent on Valentine's Day, but I really can't look at it at work. You may wish to check the URL first before you click the link.
The idea is totally quid pro quo and I think it says so in the entry. I will check later.
Hopefully, it's kinda like the giving/consumption of chocolate-- not limited to the day, just a *characteristic* of the day. Otherwise ... sad, sad, sad state of affairs...
I'm sorry, I've deleted my previous comment because upon rereading it, I'm not sure what I was trying to say.
Anyway: Come to think of it, you must be right -- somehow it didn't occur to me until just now that both holidays happen on the 14th. I'm with you however in thinking that it's a bad idea to limit chocolate and uh, steak to just one day.
Mmmmm... pie. Would you be willing to share some pie? *eyelash flutter*
...sure. The pie is already purchased, though. You guys okay with Country Kitchen's Fruits of the Forest pie Their menu describes it as "a captivating blend of strawberries, raspberries, apples, blackberries and rhubarb in our sweetest, flakiest crust."
I am. Nick is a freak who doesn't eat pie so more pie for us.
Pie, pie, piepiepiepiepiepie.
Hey I resemble that insult.
As a high school science teacher, I also celebrate Mole Day with my classes (to be precise, it's from 6:02 in the morning to 6:02 at night on 10/23). The problem is that it's so early in the year that we sometimes haven't even covered the mole by then.
As for the results being mixed, I just hope they added them in the correct order.
I'm not at all surprised that high school students haven't latched on to Mole Day -- I certainly wouldn't have -- but I think that the prospect of a Mole Day party would go over really well with most of my friends. I'm not even talking about a drinking party. Apparently we had some growing up to do.
Well, either that or I have some really weird friends.
Actually, it's probably a little from column A and a little from column B.

wish I'd known about the steak & stuff beforehand.
I left for work early & picked up a slice of warm apple pie from Denny's to go.
Of course it was ala mode!
