offBeat sang again at the Mill Street Inn & Pub in Cambridge. We weren't publicizing the gig because our soprano couldn't find someone to trade shifts with at work and we were going to have to sing without her (it was either that or cancel and look undependable). Somebody came through at the last minute, and she got to sing with us after all.
It wasn't a bad show, but we thought we could have done better. There were a couple of false starts, and a few songs where the audience probably couldn't tell that some of us were foundering. Like I said, we did okay, and we premiered two new songs. One of these was Dentist! from Little Shop of Horrors, which I had chosen some time ago as the song I wanted to solo on. We didn't start learning it until two practices ago, and didn't think we'd sing it tonight, but some of our percussionist's students came in with their father who happens to be a dentist, so we decided to go for it.
It came out beautifully.
Well, mostly beautifully. It's my song so I know it well, but everybody wasn't so confident. Some of the background lyrics became "ooo"s and "aahhh"s, but in a song where most of the background is "ooo"s and "aahhh"s, who's going to notice? It took us two practices to work up a new song to performance level. That's pretty good.
I'm kicking around the possibility of singing lead on a Crash Test Dummies song next.
