|11:53 pm - Weapons of Volcanic Destruction|
I just got back from Flowers for Dubya, and you should all see it.
I usually give BST shows more favorable reviews than they actually warrant because local theater depends heavily on word of mouth, but this show was actually really really great, and I'm totally going to try to bring people while it's still running. I say "try" because none of you bastards ever comes to these plays ('cept April, and she's not a bastard). It's funny and somewhat scary, you'd like it, and it's only $7.00. You'd pay more to drool through The Princess Diaries II: With a Vengeance.
The show loosely wraps Daniel Keyes' Flowers for Algernon around the political events of the last four years. The premise? When a volcano erupts in Texas, President Ira Smart decides that it's high time we invaded Mexico. Meanwhile, scientists discover an experimental drug which just may make people smarter. That's pretty much all I want to say about the plot because, well, the jokes are too good to give away. The production is cheap but with this type of material it's probably best that way. Who cares? It looks good. It sounds good too, because matchstyx (who wrote and directed the show) is a music guy, and he works well with sound. The casting couldn't be better.*
Anyway, anybody who's reading this in the Madison area should spend the $7.00 and see the play. Broom Street, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until October 24th. 8:00 PM. April, we'll get together and see it. I'll try to get some of my other friends to go too. If I get a group to go I'll more than likely let people know via this journal.
* Hey Brian! I don't know if you wrote the parts with specific people in mind or if you just got lucky, but I can't imagine anyone else playing the roles of Deering and Mom. Deering even has the right face.
Current Mood: satisfied
Current Music: Tears for Fears -- Quiet Ones
Would you be willing to go... the weekend after next? Silly midterms.
Um... Any weekend except that one. Ellen and I are gonna be out of town.

First off, thanks so much for the great word! I can't tell you how much it means to me!! :)
In answer to your question, I knew the woman playing Mom was trying out, so I knew I had to write a part with her in mind! She comes from a line of talent (And she did the costumes, too). Her father was a british actor, her daughter is currently Zombie 43 in the new movie Shaun of the Dead, and she is a hoot herself!
We almost ended up not doing the show, however, because the gentleman who is playing Deering didn't come until the last night of auditions, and up to that time I didn't have anyone who I thought could pull off the part. Right before he showed up, I was actually working with John (Ira) and my stage manager on what alternatives we could do given we didn't have the right cast for Flowers. When Chuck (Deering) showed up, we knew we could do the show, but not until then. He was perfect for the role!
Anyway, I've babbled long enough! I'm very happy you liked the show, and thanks for spreading the word!!!
