01:39 pm - "Let me get my hands on your mammary glands"
Given my musical tastes and the sort of person I am, I knew it was only a matter of time before I'd break down and record a cover of a Smiths song which would cast tenuous suspicions on my sexuality and eventually come back to ruin my political career or something.

On Wednesday I was introduced to the song Handsome Devil, and fell so inexplicably in love with it that I put together a quick and dirty cover before offBeat practiced last night. Then this morning I listened to it again a couple of times and decided that it sounds much better than I'd originally thought. I can't explain my fondness for the original song, but it's really doing it for me right now, and I'm very happy with my cover, so here it is:

Handsome Devil 3.99 mb

Get it now before I become embarrassed, freak out, and take it down. Here (in case you're interested) are the lyrics:
Oh, all the streets are crammed with things
eager to be held,
and I know what hands are for
and I'd like to help myself.
You ask the time,
but I sense something more
and I would like to give you
what I think you're asking for.
Oh, you handsome devil.
Oh, you handsome devil.

Oh, let me get my hands
on your mammary glands,
and let me lay your head
on the conjugal bed.
I say, I say, I say...

I crack the whip and you skip,
but you deserve it.
You deserve it, deserve it, deserve it.
A boy in the bush is worth two in the hand.
I think I can help you get through your exams,
oh, you handsome devil.

Oh, let me get my hands
on your mammary glands,
and let me lay your head
on the conjugal bed.
I say, I say, I say...

I crack the whip and you skip,
but you deserve it.
You deserve it, deserve it, deserve it.
And when we're in your scholarly room,
who will swallow whom?
And when we're in your scholarly room,
who will swallow whom?
Oh, you handsome devil.

Oh, let me get my hands
on your mammary glands,
and let me get your head
on the conjugal bed.
I say, I say, I say...

There's more to life than books, you know,
but not much more.
Oh, there's more to life than just books, you know,
but not much more, not much more.
Oh, you handsome devil.
Oh, you handsome devil.

And incidentally, since I haven't plugged them yet, January's MP3s of the Month have been up for like, almost two weeks. There are two, and they are covers of background music which only appeared on the LP version of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Well... Morrissey appreciates them enough to write and sing about them. I just like the song. Did you know it outside of my version? I am casually very fond of The Smiths, which means that I started out liking How Soon is Now?, bought a used best-of CD, gave it a listen, got bored and shelved it, and now every few months I hear one of their songs, decide that it's fantastic, and listen to it obsessively for a couple of days.

I think my fondness for The Smiths is like my fondness for David Lynch movies, though. I love David Lynch. His stuff tends to make me feel better when I'm depressed, but when I'm in a good mood I realize that it's probably really not good for me.

I have no prior experience with The Smiths. Truthfully, I haven't listened to your cover yet since I am in a place with no speakers or headphones, but the lyrics are interesting and I will listen when I have some kind of audio output device available.

Ah. Well, whatever. Anyway, The Smiths: worth checking out if you're the sort of person who likes British, angsty, post-punk-pre-emo '80s rock.

Oh, the other thing is that I'm taking the vocals an octave down from where Morrissey sings them, but I didn't have to. My vocal range is great for going "moo" in the background of a cappella songs, but it's awkward for lead vocals. His songs suit my voice surprisingly well.

i still think you should try to do a Sisters of Mercy song since you have a good deep voice. (even if might possibly be an FBI agent)

I'd be willing to entertain suggestions. I know you've made a couple before, and I think I still have the MP3s you stuck in my shared folder.

Seriously? What are you going to do? Soft tap? Do some stand up comedy? How about your impression of Kurt Douglas beating up a homeless guy?

How do you see that as Kurt Douglas? That's supposed to be Yul Brynner.

I Apologize, I forgot, please don't arrest me.
