11:49 pm - MP3 of the Month is up
...get it while it's hot.

This month features Half-Born Worlds, an electronic track off Functionality, one of the albums I used to sell through MP3.com. I've updated it somewhat, and this new version sounds pretty fantastic.

Long, boring update coming soon, probably during my long, boring day at work tomorrow.

I think I'd read about that before. Taft was not a little guy.

I'll admit I've never been happy with the panflute voice at the beginning of the song (which may be merely limited by your resources at hand) but otherwise I really couldn't imagine how you could actually make this song better. You did it tho', & it does sound fantastic. Indeed, much fuller & more complete. Good work!

How recently did you see that the title is from Fritz Leiber? I seem to recall some time ago a discussion about the accuracy & doubt that it originated within the works of Lovecraft.

It's a reference to The Curse of Monkey Island.

I also recognize it from your Rocky poem. My reaction was still, "Door hinge??"

I know I talked about it, but I'm not sure whether I actually used that one at Rocky or not.

Glad you asked! I remember that the book I was reading was the Del Rey compilation, Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos. Amazon has a feature which allows you to search the text of a book, and it only just occurred to me that I could find the source of the phrase that way.

Regarding the pan flute, I like it, but I'm curious: is it the pan flute itself, or do you think it would sound better with a different flute sample? I should probably mention that the instrument samples I used here are from the same program I was using in 2000, and they're far from perfect. If you know what to listen for, you can hear background hiss and other undesirable sonic elements in my older stuff. I tried reworking Half-Born Worlds to play on my newer MIDI software, and it's just not possible without doing a lot more work. Some of the instrument samples from my old software would require a combination of two or more samples in the new software just to sound right. Maybe someday, though. At any rate, I'm glad to hear you like the new version.

Nice!

I wasn't sure I recognized it at first, until somewhere about midaway through. I think that's a good thing, and compliment besides. I'd like to compare it to the original, but I'll have to check out my (currently "offline") desktop for that.

Very nice.
