10:31 pm - Okay, so I'm not Merlin Mann.
5ive highlights of the last few days:
  1. Sharing the pain of this joke with others:
Q: Whatddaya get when you cross a snake, a rabbit, and an amoeba?

A: An adder that multiplies and divides.
  2. Watching Napoleon Dynamite with agaysexicon and fuzzyinthehead and having them totally not appreciate it (which is okay).

  3. Listening to somebody overanalyze the "Happy Monday!" which I wrote on her birthday card: "I still don't get it. 'Cuz um, I think my birthday wuddn on Monday last year. I think. I would of taken it off if it was, an' I di'n't have to, I think."

  4. Staying up way too late with xmerrie1039x last night to ensure that we'd win an eBay auction for a Korean bootleg of a Rick Moranis movie no one's ever heard of.

  5. Finally receiving my DVD of Cornman II: The Day of the Locusts
And that's just the leisure activities.
Current Mood: productivedoing things is what I like to do.
Current Music: The Legenday Criswell Predicts Your Incredible Future

1) Excellent! I have to remember that one.

2) It seemed to be lost on a few people :(

Some people just don't get Napoleon Dynamite. I think it might have something to do with the fact that they watched it with me. I don't laugh much during movies, even when they're freakin' hilarious. It seems like a lot of people enjoy comedy more when the people around them are reacting, and I usually don't.

The most entertaining part of that movie, for me, at least, was the dance sequence. Pretty much everything else was lost on me. I just couldn't get drawn into the characters or humor.

Next time, COlin, just bring over Primer, and we'll have a good ole time.

I probably will, but I'd rather make you kids sit through The Hudsucker Proxy, provided you haven't seen it before. Everybody sits through that one with me sooner or later.

Cornman 2 is even better than cornman 1, I thought the plot was a little weak in C1. Sheila # 3 is the superior Sheila.

Haven't watched Cornman yet, but hopefully tonight. Very excited about it. This looks to be the best movie ever.

Ah, the great painful pun jokes.

Q. What do you call an escaped midget psychic?

A. A small medium at large.

...but my all time favorite question/answer jokes came from a book a friend of mine wrote for an art class. It was a collection of jokes his grandfather would tell:

Q: Why did the chicken cross the road?
A: Why don't you shut up, you schmuck!

Q: What did the famer say when he lost his tractor?
A: Sit on it, you little pea-brain!

Q: What's black and white and red all over?
A: You, if you don't leave me alone!

Q: What's the loudest sound on earth?
A: Your mother in a tree!

Meh. Un-jokes don't do much for me. Maybe that's why I don't care for all the hoopla surrounding The Aristocrats, or why Twisp and Catsby irritate me so much.

Bad jokes, on the other hand...

Un-jokes are not funny, but context is (to me, at least). I find the existence of the unfunny joke book very amusing, but I probably wouldn’t page through it. It’s like my PC speaker version of the Rocky Horror soundtrack. I’m tickled pink at the thought of somebody finding it in a friend’s CD collection, and asking them “why would you even have this?”

I found parts of The Aristocrats very funny, but they were the parts where the rules of the joke were unexpectedly disregarded. Carrot Top’s version, for example, got a big laugh out of me:
So I went into a talent agent’s office the other day and I said, “have I got an act for you.”

“Yeah? Is it another one of your goddamn prop routines?”
This joke doesn’t work out of context, but it’s funny when it’s unassumingly wedged into 90 minutes of sex ‘n’ feces. Introduced as an un-joke it’s probably not funny at all, beyond Carrot Top’s self-deprecation.

See, I already hate that movie knowing that the one of the few points that would make me laugh is provided by Carrot Top.

I know the premise of The Aristocrats but I'm still undecided on whether or not to watch it. I remember an old Mad magazine bit where they illustrated how certain commedians would tell the old "fly in my soup" joke which I rather enjoyed, & a stand-up commedian later doing much the same thing with another old stand-by joke. Things like that keep me interested in the concept but if it's a "sex 'n' fecies" joke I probably wouldn't want to hear it in the first place. Some people have told me I'd really like the movie (most likely because they really like it) but what do you think? You seem to know my sense of humour fairly well.

To be honest, I was disappointed because it's pretty devoid of actual information, at least as far as documentaries go. It's mostly short clips of comedians either telling the joke, discussing what they find offensive, or expounding on the basic principles of Dirty Joke Theory (short summary: “make ‘em gasp”). It’s worth it if you want to hear Bob Saget curse like a sailor in a Porta-John which has just toppled over, but I think the actual funny parts are few and far between.

I do have access to a copy, so you can see it for free if you like.
